After the applications, freshers’ fayres, trials, fitness tests, weights, cardio sessions, indoor nets, one to ones, spin classes, 6 am swims, outdoor fielding sessions and pre-season tours, the real work starts today.
Four years to the day since we made out first class debut at the Kia Oval against Surrey, the Yellows will today be treading the turf at another famous Test venue – Edgbaston – as they begin a 3 day fixture against Warwickshire CCC.
The Bears, led by former England star Ian Bell, will be putting out a strong team in advance of their first 2016 County Championship game at Hampshire in 10 days time.
Andrew Lawson’s team will feature two players who are new to the squad. Right-arm paceman Moin Ashraf made his first class debut for Yorkshire back in 2010. Now at Leeds Beckett University he is a welcome addition to the squad where his experience will be invaluable. Meanwhile Ashley Gowers will be making his first class debut for us. The 21 year old wicket keeper from Bury has played many County 2nd XI games for Lancashire CCC as well as representing the Red Rose at all age group levels.
The full squad is: Christian Davis (capt), Moin Ashraf, Steve Bullen, Ash Gowers (wk), Chris Harwood, Alex Lilley, Archie Ogden, Billy Root, George Scott, Henry Thompson, Liam Watkinson, Logan Weston.
It will be a busy start to the season for the Yellows. Folloing the Edgbaston clash the boys will take on Sussex CCC at Hove (5-7 April) before heading back North to face county champions Yorkshire CCC at Headingley.
